Default where to wire in my A/F gauge?

my buddy bought an 87 foxbody and it came with an auto meter A/F pillar gauge. anyway he swapped it out for something else and just gave it to me. any way, i want to wire this thing up but i don't know where to splice it into. i can either splice into my current upstream which is just past the collector (i have LT's) OR i can get a separate O2 sensor and plug it it where i should have my post cat O2 (i have O2 simms). i would think that the closer to the engine, the better. idk. the back of it has 3 wires, red, black, and purple. let me know guys, and thanks in advance.

sorry for the camera phone pics.
