Default ****ing annoying!!!

it just stated happening today

i went to fill up my truck and it clicked off at 40 dollar and when i go to my truck to take off i notice that its only 3/4 full on the gas gauge...oh well?!!?

after drivign a little bit i get this "dinging" sound and i look down and its my gas gauge and its reading EMPTY!!! but as soon as i take off from a stop it goes right back up to 3/4 full

and after driving around for a couple hours in stop and go traffic it only goes to empty when i come to a complete stop....and it only drop to "E" when i have overdrive engaged...not when i have the truck ot of overdrive of in 2nd....

i have no idea why its doin all the sudden...and that damn dinging sound that comeone when its on empty is driving me NUTS!!!!

my freinds JGC used to do that. then he punctured his take off roading and we replaced the whole tank, pump, everything and it was all better. this leads me to believe its something in the tank.

There Should be a float in your gas tank attached to your fuel pump. You should see kind of a metal chipboard looking thing where the arm of the float contacts it. LIGHTLY take a piece of 1000 grit sandpaper and polish up the contacts. If necessary you can bend the piece of metal toward the contact plate so it doesn't pull away from it.

My 1996 had the exact same problem as you mentioned, and thats how I fixed it. Shop told me I needed a new fuel pump for 360$ to fix it. I was like **** that so i took it apart and started messing with it when i saw that. I ixed it for the 2$ i spent on sandpaper.

Good Luck

Try running a few bottles of techron or some sea foam. My corvette had this problem, it a common thing with them. Ran some techron and it's fixed. Has to do with sulfur building up on the sending unit. Not saying this will fix your problem but it's worth a shot.

batty, wth are you doing running your tank low enough that it SHOULD be dinging at you, i NEVER let my tank get below 1/4 full

and loud, it is most likely as suggested above, the sulfur build up on the sending unit, or the sending unit itself and IS in the tank

the same dinger goes off when i have low coolant, leave the keys in it and open the door, turn the key back and open the door, when i first turn the truck on.....and sometimes when i let the tank get that low. i dont always have enough money to get gas
