Some ?s about Dak/Durango Rears & Gears
I'm looking for a junkyard rear swap for my Dakota. Currently I'm running 3.55's in an open 8.25. I'm looking for 3.92's with a limited slip/factory posi (sorry about the term I know it's Dodge blasphemy but they don't call them sure grips anymore)
Anyway, I can only assume they didn't put the 3.92 gears in the 8.25 rear so I'm looking for a Durango with a 9.25 because they're more common (I actually haven't found one without it) and from what I hear it's much more common to find the posi in the Durango.
So here's the problem I'm running into... on my Dakota is lists the gear ratio on the sticker inside the glove box. However, many of the trucks I'm looking at don't have this sticker! Did they stop putting them in later models? Did they move the sticker/info somewhere else? Or am I just the lucky guy who came across 6 trucks in the same junkyard that someone decided to scrape these stickers from?
Also, what exactly am I looking for as far as the sticker terminology for the posi? I know it's as simple as spinning the tires but alot of these wrecks are either blocked on the wheels and the places won't let you bring in a jack to raise it up. The stickers do list something to the extent of limited slip but that's not exactly how it's worded and I don't want to end up with the wrong thing. I know it's a long shot to find all this in a junkyard but considering what it costs to do it new it's worth my time.
Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time.

Well like I said I was assuming they only put them in 9.25's ...and we all know what happens when you assume. Hah, anyway, that setup would totally work but did it come with the factory posi? Good to know they do make them for the 8.25's though, thx
i wouldnt put it past me they came with the factory limited slip but even so, they're garbage.

you have to modify the rear axle out of a durango to work because of the leaf spring setup. and yes, some dakotas came with 3.92's in the 8.25 rear. some also had LSD. why not just order a 3.92 ring and pinion set for the 8.25? go to ringpinion.com and search for the 8.25 axle. they have factory LSD's, auburn, and truetracs for the 8.25, and all kinds of gear sets.

All good to know I appreciate the input... the only reason I'm not ordering them new is because for front and rear gears plus a tru trac I'll spend almost 2 grand when if I do the leg work I can but the factory setup for closer to $200 thanks again for the info!
