Default Mobil1 or Royal Purple for...

... regular oil changes? (currently every 3K)
Differentials?
Transfer case?
Tranny?

I don't do a lot of towing (yet) but my '03 Quad Cab is my daily driver and weekend warrior. Just curious what the consensus is out there.

Royal Purple is a much better synthetic than Mobil 1 in my opinion. In fact I don't think they even belong in the same category. If you're looking to use royal purple every oil change, go for Amsoil instead, and push the change interval at least to 5k.

I personally use Mobil 1 or Valvoline Full Syn, but that's because number 1, I don't have a local supplier of Amsoil, and number 2, I just plain old don't have the extra cash.

Diff's depends on what you're running. Open diff? LSD? Locker?

transfer and tranny just use Mopar ATF +4 or equivalent. Some people use a synthetic, but I don't think it's necessary personally.

I use modil1 in my truck and change every 6k miles. My procharged formula I use RP and change every spring, I put 600k miles on it last year.

with synthetic oil you can go longer between changes, just use a good oil filter. RP and Amsoil are both good, its all preference. Amsoil is a little harder to get thats why i use RP.

RP is WAY, WAY overrated. It is NOT better than M1. It's not crap or anything, but it's nothing special.

Better than both is "German Castrol" 0w30. Autozone generally sells it. It says Castrol Syntec and MUST say either "European Formula" on the front and/or "Made in Germany" on the back. The ONLY weight that applies is 0w30 - don't worry, it's really thicker than that, so it's not going to make a bunch of leaks appear from being too thin.

Also, while we're at it, for a filter, run Bosch, M1 or K&N. Avoid the hell out of Fram, STP, AC Delco. Especially Fram. I use Bosch. It's priced around the same as the crap filters while being almost as good as M1 and K&N.

go to amsoil for your reg oil, dont know whats best for the axles yet, and stick with MOPAR ATF+4 for the tranny and transfer cases. it's already synthetic fluid and its engineered for chrysler/dodge/jeep equipment.

Not even Amsoil beats GC. Amsoil is definitely great, and better than M1 and RP. I don't think it's worth it unless you have a local source and can get it for a good price. GC is really good.

Amsoil... wow, my grandfather used to sell that stuff.

Interesting perspectives. I'm just running the stock open diff for now.

I guess the next best course of action is to price out all this stuff/options/etc and see if my pocket book can handle it. ;-)

Thanks again for the input!

RP is wayyy over rated. I saw a comparrison of all the oils out there and how they perform and to most peoples surprise the top two were AIMSOIL and Pennzoil. RP was like 7th and Mobil 1 was also down around there.

umm... no.

Royal Purple is a totally different type of oil then Mobil1 mobile 1 has changed there formula to a crappier one to save money. thats why its cheaper, its in the same cat as all the other rando **** they sell at walmart for discount prices.

Alot of studies have been done on ALL the different types of oils, i remember reading about it, if i could find the link i would post it. It was a PDF though.

Anyways, they took every kind of oil you can buy and ran it in the engine till there was no oil left... and guess what?

Royal Purple, Amsoil, and some Penzoil (special) stuff came on the top page... mobile 1 wasn't even on the top.

Royal purple has a chemical that coats the parts (it also makes the insides have a purple tint) if for some reason you run out of oil you can run the engine safely till you get home without MAJOR damage, along with a few other types of oils do the same thing, Amsoil, Penzoil (special something), RoyalPurple, ect.. not mobile1.

Mobile1 use to be good, but they have changed the oil over the past few years.

I use Royal Purple, or Amsoil. Nothing else.

The coating these oils use on your parts, also cause way less friction heat, and increase perf. a very tad bit.. nothing noticeable but its there..

everyone saying Royal purple is overrated, you need to do your research before you start giving our members false info.

Its expensive yes, because most people with high performance vehicles use it and with syn you dont have to change as often, with the others you do.. so really your using RP, Amsoil, over Mobile1 the cheaper stuff comes out to the same price in the long run, since you will be changing your Mobile1 syn, more often then the RP, Amsoil.

im going to try and look for that damn PDF.. otherwise just google the info and read reviews.. unbiased reviews.... not rando ones.

I think i saw the same review... it might have been rated 7th... but it did the least amount of damage to the part. along with amsoil and penzoil...

i think thats the same PDF i was talking about...
