Default 3.9 litre with no power, low mpg

Hi All,

My first post. Have recently bought a 2002 Dakota, and really like it alot. Have had a couple problems...but used is used.

Since I have bought the truck I have replaced the pre cat oxygen sensor, and seemed fine for about a month.

However, the other day went for about 50 mile highway ride on a hot day. When I returned to the city had a P0171 code show up. I turned off the code by disconnecting the battery and then took the truck for a ride. Had a code P0132 show.

Now the truck has a very slow idle, burns alot of fuel, the tail pipe is very black, and vehicle smell very gassy.

The truck kind of "stutters and bucks" at almost any speed.

Any ideas as to what is wrong? Oxygen sensor again? MAP sensor?

If MAP sensor, where is it located?

Thanks in advance for your help

more than likely its the o2 sensors. could also be a coolant temp sensor.

Hi Wink,

Thanks for responding so quickly. Kind of had a suspicion was going to be the o2's again. Any brand better than the other?

I am not much of a mechanic, so need all the help I can get. Can you tell me, where is the MAP sensor in my truck? Thought it was supposed to be on passenger fender, but I can't see one...or I don't know what I am looking for.

I do see a little black box with a plug in and a vacuum tube right on the throttle body..is this it?

Thanks

I would probably tell you to invest in a shop manual (Chilton's or haynes, i have both and they are nearly the same thing) and do some of it yourself (not having to pay rediculous dealer fees)...

Cheers and welcome to the forum!

Dude, it's a 3.9 you never gonna have allot of power JJ I agree go spend the $30-$40 and get you a manual it will help a whole bunch. Also start using the search option on this forum, you will find allot of your answers there. I know I just went ahead and replaced just about every sensor on my 4.7 because I have high mileage and my truck's mpg is like new again, the money I save in gas will more than pay for the sensors. Keep us posted and good luck.

the MAP is located in front of the throttle body. my advice for you is when you repalce that, get throttle body cleaner and clean the **** outta the TB, make sure you get a new gasket from napa. it's like $2. go with NGK brand o2, im using them and i cant complain about them...

likely wasting money...

diagnose first. but you need the book.

throwing cash at a problem wastes that cash.

I had a map sensor error that was a wiring issue in the front O2 sensor.
