Advice tightening locknuts in 42RE
First - Thank you to all of you who helped me with my tranny.
I followed the instructions to adjust the rear band - set to 72 in. pounds then backed off 4 turns. I made sure that the adjuster didn't move after that. HOWever- I couldn't get my torque wrench on the locknut to tighten to the 25 or 30 ft pound so I just used a box wrench and made it tight.
Is the torque number on the locknut critical?
I made it tight enough that it won't come loose; but before I put fluid back in the trans I thought I'd ask.
Is it alright to tighten the locknut as I described?

No it is not that critical to be dead on. But close enough to it. If you wanted find an easy bolt you can get to (any bolt) and loosen it up. Then use your torque wrench to tighten it up to the locknut spec. Then loosen it and tighten it up with the box wrench and see if what you tighten it to and the new nut are about the same or if you need to tighten it up more.
Thank you for the reply Crazy4x4; I appreciate it.
As it turns out, the pan had an e-clip in it sitting on the magnet.
I refilled the tranny and ran it over to my local guy. Nice fellow. After looking in his book and measuring the part - it turns out to be a clip that goes on the parking rod.
I asked him to adjust the front band and replace the e-clip next week - he figured an hour of labor.
Going to tow the boat this afternoon to take family tubing so all good for now.
Thanks again.
Really glad to have this forum's help.
