Welcome to DF Randy! If this is for your 01 Dakota you have the thread titled as, you have missed the 2nd Gen Dakota Section. I'll gladly move it over to that correct section for ya. The guys over there should be able give ya more advice! Good Luck!

Lightbulb Code p0420

I have the same issue with my check engine light staying on,it used to just come on in the winter time in the mornings with a cold start up and someone suggested to throw a container of carbuerator/fuel injector cleaner in and wait three cold start ups and it will turn off itself, that worked for a while and when it stopped working i disconnected the negative on the battery and reset the computer. So i said f*ckit,im gettint the NGK oxygen sensors for $100 from the site cause the Bosch replacements are junk i heard on here and other forums.I got them installed since my truck was in for inspection and they made a huge differance in the idle and gas consumption, but that lasted for about a month and now the light has come back on and a container of carb/injector cleaner has not shut it off yet.Now im hearing on here and other forums that if you have a series 40 "flowmaster"aftermarket high flow muffler it will throw this code all the time,so i dont know if thats it or im going to have to look into a new cat that i dont have the money for. Here is the link i got for the sensors http://www.ngk.com/default.asp

Had a 40 on mine for a couple years till I got tired of the drone in the cab ( Magnaflow now) and it never threw a code. My mileage has dropped quite a bit but no codes. I think the 02' sensors can get slow and still not throw a code from what I've read here. Are the NGK's really that much better than the Bosch's? IDK? Haven't replaced mine yet............looking for the time to do it.

Do I need to replace sensors before and after the cat on both sides? I know replacing the entire cat system is about $800, and I have 250K miles on my truck. My 4WD went out, and they said that was $2500 for the parts to fix that! The control module went out on that, is what they said.
