Whats the best - Tires?
I'm new to this game but need to get some new tires for my 98 dakota 4x4. Use it as a daily driver but need to get something that can take me into some of the back country lakes plus have some fun along the way. Thinking about the BFG all-terrains. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Plus whats the biggest size I could put on before a lift is needed. Thanks

31's without lift. BFG all terrains are good. It's what I'm getting. That or Goodyear Silent armor off-road things. can't remember their actual names.
I was going to get the General Grabber AT2's, but after reading a lot of mixed reviews about getting bad tires from the factory, belts breaking and bad wear patterns, I'm gonna stick with the BFG's

you are going to find bad reviews no matter what tire you look at. BFG is no exception. Your bet bet is to look at tirerack.com. They have the most comprehensive tire evaluation and review database on the net.
Yes I know that Independent, but there are more bad reviews for the General Grabbers, and they didn't rate as well in Tire Rack's tire testing. When I researched for tires, I took into account tire racks wear ratings AND the reviews from consumers.
There were fewer negative reviews for the BFG's than the General's. The negative stuff about the BFG's was mostly tire noise, and some bad wear, but it not nearly as common as in the Generals. Also, generals had complaints about getting bad tires from the factory, which I realize can happen with any tire, but it wasn't anywhere near as common with BFG's.
Also, the Goodyear tires I was looking at rated even better than the BFG's, but there is a $20 price difference for each tire, and the .8 or so better overall rating it got than the BFG's isn't worth the extra $20 for me.

I got 31 in bfg a/t's and I like them they wear good and are good off road never had a problem with getting stuck mine have about 40% tread left and I made it threw the channel as we call it which I did it in 2wd with mud up past my fog lights
i have the hankook dynapro mts ( maximum traction) and they are the best tires ive ever had. i have over 5,000 miles on them and they havent worn at all. It is a great all around tire they dont hum loud and are great on and off road. i would suggest anyone to look into them

I put Nitto Terra Grappler A/t's on my truck this summer and I love them. They are wearing very well and a good in the dirt. Can't wait to see how they do in the snow. They were like $50 a piece cheaper then the BFG's and had all good reviews other than some tire wear issues but they were all from people who had larger trucks like 2500s or Yukons. So not a problem on a small truck like the Dakota.
But its a tough choice. There are so many good A/T's out there. The BFG's, Firestones, Nittos, Cooper, Bridgestone, Toyo they all make good ones.
