Default 1997 with VSS problems, driving me nuts!!

I've searched other posts and couldn't find an answer. I found a hundred posts on what the problem initially was but no ideas on what to do after changing both sensors.

I bought a Dakota for a daily driver and two weeks later I'm ready to light the thing on fire!

It's a 97 3.9L 4x4 Auto. Changed the rear diff sensor and the sensor on the back of the t-case, **although I forgot to disconnect battery while replacing the rear diff one**. Still runs like crap. Speedo doesn't work and shows only code P0500. It doesn't idle right, the throttle is REALLY touchy at idle (if I just tap the peddal the RPM shoots up then settles down), and it hesitates/ stumbles while accelerating and at highway speeds.

The things driving me nuts, any ideas?
