Default ABS light comes on when Headlights switched on???

I have an electrical problem. I've confirmed everything else is ok (brake fluid, speed sensor, brake pedal, fuses, relays, etc) so now I'm kinda stumped. Basically, the lights go off every time I turn off the vehicle. No codes are stored as when I turn it back on the lights aren't on. As soon as I switch on the headlights the two lights light up! I am considering buying a DRB scanner but I'll likely use it the once and never again. Anyone know a way of figuring this out? I live in Vancouver, BC, as well. Are there any stores here that scan ABS codes for free?

Thanks!

I doubt there is a place where you can buy a DRB tool. They are proprietary to the Dodge dealer and supplied by Chrysler. Here in the states Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone will scan codes for free. I don't know if you have those in Canada. Maybe try the local parts stores where you live. You can also buy code readers at parts stores. Harbor Freight Tools sells them for a good price too. You are going about it the right way, scan for codes first to find out what is wrong. If your truck is 2001 or newer you can turn the ignition key to run and then back to off 3 times, on the 3rd time leave it in run and any stored codes you have will display in the odometer. I think there is a list of what the codes mean in the FAQ section at the top of the 2nd Gen page here.

Thanks Jimmy. I'm gonna call Lordco. They might have what I need.

ABS codes can't be checked with the ignition trick. Only CEL (Check Engine Light) codes can be checked with it.... ABS codes are stored seperately (same with airbags) due to Federal Laws.

I know there are ABS code scanners though. Just gotta find one or a place that'll just do it for me.

Hmm...I didn't know that. I wonder if a local brake shop would read it for you for free or a low cost?

I checked today and they won't.... However, I think I figured it out. My CHMLS (Center High-Mounted Stop Light) isn't working. I checked the bulbs and they're okay so I'm going to check the brake switch area in the morning.

I was reading elsewhere that there is a CHMSL fuse? I haven't seen one in either the dash fuse panel or the engine fuse panel. Are there more fuses after the brake switch? I also notice on the wiring diagram that the CHMSL light comes straight from the brake switch (doesn't go through the multi-function switch). Anyone encountered a bad CHMSL where the bulbs were fine?

Still no luck.... Would the reverse lights not working have anything to do with this? I was reading somewhere that if the taillights etc don't work it can trigger the dash warning lights to come on. I'm going to keep trouble shooting but now I've gotta figure out why the two reverse lights on the third cab light aren't working.... one thing after another.
