Power Steering Issue?
2001 QC 4x4
I had the rack and pinion replaced and I still have some slight squealing and moaning while turning. I have not had the truck long and was wondering if this is a dakota thing?
The ps pump was replaced before I purchased the truck. Not many kms on the pump either. Any thoughts? Would putting an additive in the ps help the moaning?
Please help this Canadian!
Cheers!

this happen to me. the previous owners most likely installed the power steering pump wrong. if they tapped the pulley on to it, it probably damaged the inside of the pump and is causing grinding. I replaced the pump and then there was no more noise. just make sure you get the pump with the reservoir on it (much easier to install) and use the correct tools to install the pulley.
if it is not grinding to bad and just making a squeeling noise and gets hard to turn at times its probably only air. Did you try to get all of the air out of the lines?

I had my mechanic check the pump and he said it is good. I read that Lucas p/s stop leak seems to get rid of the moaning. I might try that to start. I think it could possibly just be air. I tried moving the steering wheel left to right a few times.
yah try the lucas stop leak and do what spencer said. it also helps to rev up the motor to get the pump pumping faster.
if it still whines after about 5-10 min of trying to get the air out check the mesh inside the reservoir. When mine went out I went and bought a new one took it back cause i thought it was defective, tried the new one did the same thing. I checked the reservoir and the mesh was blown thru and i needed a new reservoir. Luckly i was able to find one at a pick a part because dodge charges like 300 bucks for a new pump w/ a reservoir with a 1 month backorder.
None of the major auto part stores carry it with the reservoir, but i hope it isnt that bad for you.
Good luck!
