Default 98 dakota 3.55 gears

hello iam looking for a rear end i have 3.55 and i was told to change the rear end and the truck would be better on gas and that it holds back the power is this true and what would be a better rear end to go with and i was told to get one out of a 4x4 pls let me no if this is true

97+ Dakotas had 2 rear end gearing options: 3.55 and 3.92. Having a lower gear won't help gas mileage. If you want more acceleration, go with a lower (higher numerically) gear. If you want better mileage, go with a higher gear. 4x2 vs. 4x4 doesn't matter. If gas mileage is a concern, stick with the 3.55.
