Default Question on Control Arm Bushing Install

My suspension is sloppy as hell on my dakota, maybe thats because im used to driving little econoboxes, i dont know but in any case I just got through replacing the shocks on my 01 fwd. It was a marked improvement as at least 2 of them were shot.
I still have the tell tale rattling of the front end/suspension on bumpy roads and odd squeeks. Bushings look to be in questionable shape and seeing as how the truck has 120k on it i figure its time to go ahead and replace them.
Ive read the howto on Ehow but had a question, do I need a spring compressor to do this job? The spring is between the control arms, how do I relieve the tension of the spring safely to remove the control arms?
Im planning on ES bushings and have a full shop at my disposal on the weekends so hopefully install will be a breeze.
Thanks for the help!
