Default no bus in odometer

we have a 1999 dodge dakota (business vehicle) that is having problems overheating, i think. at first it just would not start at random times so someone adjusted something and it idles at 10 mph. the battery would work, it just would not turn over. now, after you drive it for awhile, it will just turn off and sometimes reads "no bus" in the odometer. after it sits for a few hours it can be turned back on. we have taken it to the dealership SEVERAL times, I believe they replace the computer, but they cannot successfully fix it and say they have no idea what is wrong with it.

i read it. LOL.

do a search on "no bus" for a lot of threads.
it can be missing or bad ground (i left some ground wires off one time).
it can be a shorted out sensor, such as crank position or cam position.
it can be a bad pcm.
sometimes the cluster is replaced chasing this problem. i don't know if thats a legitimate fix or just extra charges.

when the problem is active, the dealership should be able to use their expensive scanner to find the problem. if its intermitent, and not active, then it would be hard to find. so - when the problem is active, unplug all sensors and turn ignition to on (not start). see if you can get the no bus to go out. then turn off and add back the sensors one at a time.

remove/clean/reinstall all grounds. check the battery ground.

edit - contact mastertech over in the caravan section. he's had some posts on this problem.
