Default 2000 Dakota tranny issues

Okay, any help is appreciated.

Here's the story: I've got a 2000 dakota v6 auto, around 130k miles.

The other day, after about a 30 minute drive or so, It started acting as if it didn't know which gear it wanted to be in, it felt like it was jumping up, then back down gears over and over again, rather fast. (every few seconds). There was a grinding noise aswell. So I stopped... waited a few, looked around underneith to make sure I wasn't dragging anything, blah blah no fluids underneith etc. All *looked* good, so i get back in and start driving again....

Now, after a few minutes of driving (seeming fine) My O/D off light comes on, I try to turn it back on, with no success... And then, TRANS TEMP light comes on....I park for a few minutes.. fire it back up, light is off, seems to be running fine...

I get it home, recheck fluids etc, everything seems fine. I have driven it several times since that day, and today.. it starts the shifting up/down rapidly again, I have no idea what's going on and any type of help is appreciated.

Thanks

unfortunately, that's what I suspected. Problem is.. it seems like these trannys are soooo hard to find at local junkyards, etc (factory v6 3.9 2wd trannys) I'm not sure what the model number would be (42re, nv3500, etc)

Anyway.. So I guess since I can't seem to find this tranny available anywhere locally, is there any other transmission that would be usable out of any different size of engine, still using my 3.9?

Since the motor (3.9) is identical to the 5.2 and the 5.9, with the exception of missing 2 cylinders, I believe that the 44RE and the 46RE would work as well, as long as they are from a 2 wheel drive. I am not sure on that, but with a little reading I am sure you could find the information. I do know that I checked the bell housing pattern on a buddy of mine's 5.9 to my 3.9, and his 46RE would fit my motor.
