Default 04 trans trouble- Help needed!!!!!

Hello all. I have a 2004 4.7 4-door dakota. I was driving and the trans jerked hard and the check engine light came on. when trying to accelerate from a stop it would sputter and surge. I took it to the closest service shop and they told me I needed a new computer. It had a trans control malfunction code in the system (P0700). I drove it for several days with no issues. the problem came back so I replaced the computer. the truck repeated the same issues after only two days. It now has a trans control malfunction code (P0700) and a failed shift solenoid F (P2706) code. The computer is not the cause of the issues if they returned after only two days. Any thoughts on what is causing this problem? Please help! thank you.

I plan on trying to do this work myself. Im looking for weather or not I need to pull the trany or if this is as simple as pulling the pan and VB to service and repair/ replace the bad solenoid. Is there any thing else that could cause this?

I ended up doing it myself. With the help of a friend (more than two hands needed not to make a mess). I ordered the shift solenoid from my local dealer. It was $480.00 for the solenoid and both filters. I then flushed the trans fluid (jiffylube $127). You want to start with new clean oil. Once the oil had a chance to cool down I pulled the pan and drained about 6qt to 8qt of fluid. I discarded the fluid.DSCF3815.jpg?t=1278608978 I then pulled both filters. Next I unpluged the harnes and disconnected the shift linkage. Here is a pic of the plug and linkage. it is behind the brake cable.DSCF3818.jpg?t=1278609197
I then was able to pull the valve body. It took about 5 or 6 bolts. here is a pic of the VB still in the trans.

Here is a pic of the VB removed.

the shift solenoid is on top of the valve body. It is attached by 14 or 16 torx bolts. I just removed all of the bolts that looked like the were under the VB. I replaced the solenoid and put it back together.

When you go to put the VB back in the trans you need to make sure that the shift solenoid linkage is in Park. look at the old one for the correct position. getting the linkage to line up while installing the VB was the hardest part for me. It was not that bad, you just cant see it. I installed the VB with new shift solenoid and new filters. I cleaned all of the sludge off the magnet in the pan and the gasket surfaces. made the new gasket and put the pan back on. When the pan is back on with the new gasket material set, you can fill her up with new ATF. Mine used 8qts. She drives like new now.

oh, dont forget to reconnect the harnes and linkage. I dont think that you need to disconnect the linkage. I did it to make testing the internal linkage operation easy when I got the VB back in.
