Overfilling oil
Just wondering if anybody here puts in more oil than the engine calls for. Like if your manual says 4.5 quarts and you just put in 5 quarts, or if you put in 4.5 when it calls for only 4 quarts.
I read on another forum a lot of guys do that to lube the engine better and so they don't have to top off the oil as soon or as often. They say it doesn't cause any problems when you add only like half a quart maximum. Anyone here done that to their Dakota?

Overfilling the engine oil can cause problems over time.
The oil can start to foam from the crank shaft hitting the surface of the oil in the pan. Fluid foaming will cause oil starvation and start to ruin the crank bearings and cause oil starvation to the top end.
Other problems may start to arise as well, but I don't remember them off hand. The fluid foaming to the worst though. Little air pockets in the engine oil is very bad.
Regularly checking your oil and keeping it at the full mark is much better than over filling.

well, there is some validity to the two points......
Note: accidental overfilling oil into your engine can cause problems too. As the crankshaft rotates it will churn the oil, causing aeration and eventually sustained foam may form. This can lead to overheated motor oil, oxidation and a loss of oil pressure. Spongy aerated oil is hard to pump. It starves the engine and critical lubricated surfaces.
