Typically set up to go as fast as possible over some nasty desert terrain. I think the term "trophy trucks" is pretty much the same thing as a prerunner.

not exactly, trophy truck is a class, prerunners are used for the shake down runs before the race to decide what lines to take etc... Trophy trucks are a $500k rig, prerunners are closers to $150k

+1. Pre-runners are just the trucks the teams use to pre-run a course before a race. They are used to keep wear and tear off the trophy trucks. Same basic design, but cheaper.
