Oh no it soaks up a lot. Think about all the extra friction going on to make the front tires rotate. AWD vehicles lose almost 25% of their power through the entire powertrain.

And 345 ft lbs of torque at the flywheel isn't a lot when you have the automatic trans and 4500lbs slowing you down. Your truck is probably lucky to make it into the 16s...

Yeah I know the quarter is slow, and 0-60. Trust me I know. But the 0-40 is pretty quick.

sonds like you have the known plenum leak that all 5.2/5.9 get look down you throttle body for a pool of oil, and if there is thats where all your problems area.. and you may want to check your cat they maybe clogged.

also does the 5.9 come with the death flash like the rams do ?

There's a known plenum leak, eh? I just checked my truck, and there is a small amount of oil in the plenum. I wouldn't call it a pool, more of a moderate coating over all the walls.

Since you describe this as a chronic issue, where does it generally leak from and how difficult is the fix? I haven't noticed any oil consumption, so it can't be a huge leak, wherever it is.

Checking the cats is a good thought. I'll probably end up replacing them though, at the same time as the exhaust and headers.

And what is the "death flash"?

I think he is refering to how detuned these things are. Why do you think superchips does so much.

Well, the plenum leak is fairly common. Enough so that Hughes makes a kit to fix it:

That being said, they are normally accompanied by lots of oil consumption, but I am betting if you give it time you will see that.

Interesting. I did a little googling, and a plenum leak seems to match my symptoms. I'm guessing the oil consumption just hasn't gotten bad yet, but enough to hamstring me on power.

The replacement sounds a little involved, but nothing I couldn't handle. I guess I need to order the kit and find a free weekend to wrench on it.

ETA: Question on the Superchips - does that automatically require premium fuel? Or is there a configuration that will give me a little boost, but still run well on regular? Not that I mind putting premium in it when available, but I'm kind of building this into my hurricane bugout truck, so it needs to be able to run on whatever's available.

It has 3 settings, one more best fuel economy, one for towing, and a thrid for performance. The fuel economy one runs 87, I forget what the towing tune requires, and the performance requires 91 or 93.
