I wont be rebuilding mine until this weekend. It is my first electronically controlled transmission, so we will see how it goes. I have rebuilt a few before but nothing any newer than an 1984 chevy with a th350. I will report how it goes in a new thread when I get it done.

Hey guys thought I would update this thread. Since I cant afford to fix my truck at the moment and I wanna nurse as many miles out of this tranny as I can I decided to try and adjust the bands.

Well I adjusted the front band and it made a world of difference. It also probably helped that I cleaned a BUNCH of dried clay from the throttle linkage. No more hesitating to shift and bogging down instead of shifting.

I plan to adjust the rear band tomorrow. And will report back.

By the way does anyone know what the highest rpm it should jump to when you put the peddle to the floor (go WOT) when I test drove it and floored it, it got up to almost 5,000 rpm's.

The front band is a PITA. there is all that linkage and a spring in the way of the adjustment. A few tips from my experience.

Tools needed. A torx 40 bit. a deep well 3/4 socket. Two torque wrench's one that does inch-pounds and one that does Foot-pounds. And several different size extensions from a snubby to 3 inchs.

A drop light or flexible flash light to see
Some brake cleaner to clean the band adjustment screw

Mark the torx bit with some kind of paint so you can easily see how many complete turns you make when backing it off after torquing it.

I just rebuilt a 46re it's not hard at all I did it for the upgrade. I went from the 42re to the 46. THere is some changes, but you can work around it by getting some new fluid lines if you need to. Also the bracket for the shifter is way different I just hacked it up and its good to go.

The hardest part of these transmissions is the od you need a press to remove the 800lb spring. Everything else is straight forward piece by piece in. Also, don't forget to check the end plays before taking it apart.

I rebuilt the 46re stock except for a shift kit and it shifts nicely.

I got 500 for a new transmission, with rebuild kit and the used tranny that I bought. Only thing wrong with it was the od snap ring broke and was sitting in the pan but it would have still been a driver.

Update: I adjusted the rear band, shifts MUCH smoother now. I would recommend everyone to do the front and rear band when they change there fluid its very simple and the only special tool you need is a torque wrench.

While I had the pan off I welded a stainless steel threaded bung into the pan. No longer will I make such a mess draining my fluid. Plus If I need to readjust anytime soon I can just put the fluid in a clean container and reuse it. These 40 dollar fluid changes are getting old already. I just changed the tranny fluid/filter less then 5,00 miles ago.

I hope this resolves my O/D issue. Currently it will come out of O/D after spirited high speed driving and the only way to get it to go into O/D is to pull over turn the truck of sit for a few minutes and then restart and go.

Anyone know a reputable shop In Central Florida or who sells over the internet?

My truck is a 2002 V6
There might be some sites online or a dealer to give a call to.
