Default Fan relay went out.. now i'm lost.

My check engine light came on, i checked the fuses and the fan relay had melted to the fuse block. I checked the wires and two of them are getting power, not sure how to check the other two. THe fan works if i connect to a direct power source. No matter what i do even with a new relay i get the engine code for the fan relay. Any help would be nice. THis is on a 2k dakota 3.9 automatic. It is code 1491 if i am right.

you probly have a short or melted wire that is causing that. my daytona had that problem and it took me a while to find it.

Default Checked two of the wires.

I don't know how to check the negative wires.. i might have just thought of a way lol. But two of the wires that connect to the relay are getting power. The other two i guess are negative wires. I am so screwed cause now I can't pass inspection.

on a relay 1 power wire is from the battery, 1 power wire is an ignition switch controlled power, 1 is a ground, and the last one is the wire going to the fan if two of the wires have power when the key is in the off position then either some one wired the relay up wrong ir there is a bad connection. one of hte non-powered wires should run to another relay which will be a ground wire(usually run to multiple relays). i hope this helps a bit

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...nd-relays.html

there is a pic in this thread that shows how a relay is wired up.

it also explains how relays work and such

i did the same thing with my truck except my radiator needed to be replaced and that it was so corroded that it stopped cooling and eventually i drove for 20 more minutes and when i got to my house i popped the hood and walked to the tailgate to amke a phone call and it exploded all over the house and driveway.lol

I checked it with the little light thing. One of the wires will light it up either way i do it. So it seems one wire is acting as a ground and a positive.

Default Turns out its the wire to the ecm from what I can tell.

The wire thats bad does not go got the fan so I fear the ecm is shot just for the fan. I can run the truck but I will have to get my friend to wire the fan to a switch and now i'll never pass inspection lol.

you can get a replacement fan controller from an auto parts store.

Default Either way.

Either way I don't know how to get the check engine light to turn off now. I will have to find out how to rig it.
