Default Dakota stalls when shifting into reverse

2003 Dakota quad cab 3.9 auto trans. 90% of the time when I put the truck into reverse the truck stalls. In drive it is just fine. I have tuned the truck up and it idles fine but as soon as I drop it into reverse it stalls. Also I notice when trying to hold the brakes in reverse and give it lots of gas it feels like something is stuck in the tranny. The engine lags and almost stalls but when I do the same in drive you can get the wheels to brake loose and spin. I checked the fluid and it look fine and does not smell burnt. No codes in the computer either so I'm stumped. Any Ideas what might be the cause?

Ok I read the post and did some trouble shooting. Still could not find the problem so I took it to a transmission shop. They tell me the problem is in the torque converter. Because the pressures are higher in reverse the torque converter is locking up in reverse causing the stall problem. A new converter is $250. My question is will my torque converter out of my 99 dak with 3.9 engine be the same stall speed as the 03? Would it be just as simple to swap trannies rather than converters since the 03 has 180,000 miles and the 99 has just over 100,000 miles.

swapping the transmission is a weekend job, but can be done by the average shade tree mechanic. My .02 would be to change the tourqe converter. Do you know any of the previous history on the transmission your looking into swapping into your truck?
