2000 dakota 4 door tranny issue
2000 Dakota 4 door 2wd 5.9 with a 135,000 miles on it.
the truck runs and drives great.
Problem #1: when i put the truck into gear the thing on the dash which tells me what spot I'm in is OFF. When I am in D it only moves to N. Is there away to adjust this?
#2 the owner before me and every other person that drove it HAD to of put the truck into (D) which is actually 2 and drove it around for awhile.
Once I figured out this was my issue (very quickly) I always noticed second gear or 3rd , I am pretty sure its second doesn't like to shift unless it rev's to about 2,500+ rpms.
IF I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS A LITTLE, it will shift but takes it a second to think about it.
THE TRANNY NEVER SLIPS OR GRINDS IN ANY GEARS. its just this one gear where it just wants you to let off the gas a little and then it will shift.
Tranny fluid still looks good, but I will change it aways. I just want to get all of your in site first.

I've noticed the Orange dash indicator strip is larger than the actual slot...
So sometimes you can see the indicator sort of showing up in N and D.
it's possible though that it's slipped out of position over time, though I'm not sure how that could happen... unless someone was playing around with the instrument panel?
As for the revving through 2nd, I'm not sure. You'll have to wait for someone else to advise on that one.

First off I would hold up on changing the fluid. If I did decide to change it i would take it to a service shop and have them do a complete sealed fluid exchanger. Just seems like when you open up a tranny to do a service....it always leads to bigger problems!
as far as the gear indicator, i wish i could tell u how to adjust it...hopefully someone will chime in...i know there is a way to fix it....but i dont think it will solve a shifting problem? Good luck!!

OK, I fixed the dash shifting thing. There is a white (nylon) adjustable screw and a very THIN orange cable down under the dash (right next to the steering shaft), adjust the screw and bam, your done. less than 5 mins.
As for the shifting issue. It is my second gear and i didn't mean that i have to take my foot off the gas, but ease off the gas, like stop accelerating normal to like a cruising speed gas pedal touch. it will shift if you keep pushing the pedal, shifts at 2500rpms.
