Default High/Low Beam Switch Setup

So I've read that the reason the low-beams shut off when the highs come on is heat. My first question is is this heat in the bulb or heat in the wiring? The reason I ask is because I have aftermarket headlights that have separate bulbs, and it would be great if the lows did not have to shut off. So my second question: is it possible to keep the lows from turning off when switching to highs?

Thanks

The factory lamps are dual filament- one filament is 55W low, the other is 65W high. I've held both of them on momentarily by holding the lever halfway back, but yes, they can and will overheat. If you have seperate lamps, you can see how it'll look by holding it halfway back. There's a relay mod to keep them on, i'm sure.
