Question Pros/Cons of Dumped/side exit exhaust setups

What are the pros and cons of converting to a dumped setup with my exhaust? I am already aware of the increased corrosion/potential for rust of the underbody due to the exhaust fumes sometimes hanging out down there. I would give everything a good coat of underbody paint. I had the dumped exhaust on my old 98 gmc slownoma 4 banger and it was really loud also because it was echoing off of the pavement under the truck. Will I have any backpressure issues with running the dumped setup? I am mostly concerned with performance changes.

A slight deviation from the dump setup: What changes would I experience due to changing it to a side exit (before rear tire)?

Currently I am exiting from the stock location while running a flowmaster 50 series.

I have run a search and have not found any definitive answers to my question. I did however find an amusing as hell thread of drama of some people arguing about mpg improvements due to a gear swap. I really got into that one, but I digress....

Current truck this question is in reference to: 2004 2wd Dakota Quad Cab 3.7L automatic transmission 3.92 gear ratio
Relevant mod: air intake and the exhaust setup mentioned above

the only bad thing about a dumped exhaust is it gets kinda annoying afterawhile. I have a glasspack under my truck that gets more quiet every day due to the hearing loss.

Having it out the side is perfect, its not as loud as right under the cab. and no it wont turn your rims a nasty color unless you let it sit idle for more than a couple hours...
That really only happens on diesels.

There wont be any backpressure changes either, your backpressure really only depends on if there is a muffler there or not.

I went from an xcelerator muffler to no muffler and gained about 100 miles to the tank. Then I went from no muffler to a flowmaster super 40 and added 5" and 32"s to the dakota and lost about 50 miles to the tank. Last week I just dumped the super 40 and so far have 57 miles only using about 1/8th of the tank so far (that is on 5" and 32"s). Will re-post my mileage to the tank as soon as I run out of gas..haha

I dont run a muffler either. i cant tell a power differance and milage is about the same, maybe up a tiny bit. the only differance i can tell, is that it sounds faster, lol.

Well I am definitely going to keep the muffler. I was just thinking about different exit options. It sounds like the side exit might be best.

I could just get a new chrome tip. My current chrome tip has faded and isnt shiny anymore. Is there a way to revamp it and bring its luster back to life? I mean, come on! The shiny tip has got to give me at least 10hp! lol

Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. What kind of muffler do you have anyways?

The only issue with side dumping before the rear tire is that over time if you are going down the interstate, with it close to your rear tire, it can heat it up and blow out if it gets too hot. Ive seen it happen.
