look on the bottom of your bed- When our dually's pinion seal/bearing let go, it left a very nice spray pattern of gear oil on the underside of the bed. It also made a whirring noise under accel, but I think it was more of the carrier bearing than it was rear-end. But dako's dont have carrier bearings, so I can only guess it's a pinion or wheel bearing.

I should have got this in sooner. Been real buisy. Ok here's my story. I jacked it up in reR like rant said and spun each wheel. The passenger was a grinder. But after taking diff cover off I discovered the gears were perfect. Not a scratch. So I disassembled. It's not that hard. There's post that tell you how. Oh yeah except - take that pinion gear nut off before you start. My issue was the pinion bearing in the front. There are 2. The little rollers were scratched up real bad. Something got in there and scratch it. So I bought a bearing/ seal install kit off eBay for 89 bucks. Worked perfectly and now she sounds great. I swathed to that real good purple lube though. I think my issue started when I changed the lube months ago. Take my advice do not use a white wheel to clean off gasket surface. I still think a piece of wire got in there.

Sucks that you had to do that. But atleast it's fixed, also I am pretty sure daks have carrier bearings, atleast mine did when I had it opened up to swap the gears. The carrier bearings are the ones on the side of the carrier. that were a PITA to take off for the gear swap. Also did you have fun setting the preload on the crush sleeve? It took me a while to get it right, but eventually it was set at the correct in/lb.

That cush sleeve was a PITA, supposed to be like 125lbs. Thats a lie more like 300lbs. Not sure how perfect I got it but, I would say for a backyard mechanic it sounds like I got it close enough.

Default same problem

I had the same problem with my 2000 Dak SLT 4X4. A freind and I change out the alxe bearings on both side and it still sounds like I have 44's on it. does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to take it to an expensive mechanic or dealer.

thanks

You must have missed the bad baiting. With the axles out spin the pinion from the front of pumpkin. Listen for noise. That's how I found mine.
