Default rear end noise

I gt a 99 Dakota sport 4x4 and the rear end or something back there makes it sound like I got 44" mud runners on it. I pulled the diff cover and inspected everything - all is tight and no metal shavings. So I put it back together and put royal purple oil in it. Still got that sound. Does anyone think the uJoint would be making that sound. I think I should change that before getting into maybe bearings in the rear end.
Any ideas.

Joe

Unfortunately, if it was making noise and you were NOT low on oil and there were no shavings, it sounds like a bearing has gone bad.

Did you add the appropriate additive, if you have the Limited Slip Differential?

No 44's It sure sounds like it though going down the road. How can I tell which bearing. Is there an easy way to do that?

You can try by jacking up the rear and turning each of the components and listening for noise. All else fails, disassemble and look for bearing wear.

Looking for wear is the best bet. Its going to be hard to tell by just turning the wheels unless its really bad

Hey Rantz. I got a question for you. Ive been going through the forum and I have a problem with my differential as well. My car is a 2000 Dakota, and I had a slight leak in the differential. I started hearing a whirring noise when accelerating and slowing down, and I asked around and was told to change the oil. I emptied it and cleaned it and refilled the oil, and it still makes the same noise. The dealer told me it would be around 1k to fix the differential and that for sure the differential is shot. Another mechanic told me that the differential will lock up and I will get in an accident unless I fix it asap. I dont really know a lot about this problem and I dont want to spend 1k on the dealer unless I absolutely have to. According to the dealer, I do not have a limited slip differential either. Any ideas what it could be?

Even if someone else on the forum knows, can someone please help? Thanks in advance,

Could be as simple as a wheel bearing being bad. Dont take it to a dealer look around for a good mechanic. Its hard to tell you exactly what the problem is when I cant be there to hear it in person. Did this noise just start out of the blue? Our old 95 grand cherokee had same noise never did anything with it at 150,000 miles now has 216,000 and its my woods beater.
