I'm not sure about your 98 but on my 01 I just put a big ole adjustable wrench on the fan clutch nut and smacked the handle end with a big hammer a couple of times and the clutch nut loosened right up. Hit the handle of the wrench towards the passenger's side of the truck. The nut should be regular right hand thread.

Others have done that plus put a big c-clamp on the side of the water pump pulley to hold it steady while removing the fan clutch nut. Another guy on here made a spanner wrench out of a piece of steel stock and 2 bolts, just measured the distance between 2 of the holes in the water pump pulley, drilled holes in the steel the same distance apart and put on nuts and bolts that were long enough to reach in the holes and hold the pulley while turning the fan clutch nut.

If that all fails Autozone rents a fan clutch removal tool kit. You pay a deposit up front and get it back when you return the tool kit to the store.

Hit the wrench handle one good time with a 3 pound sledge, it should break loose pretty easy. On my fan, 2 of the blades are spaced further apart than the others. If yours is the same, turn the fan so that wider space is up top, facing you. That way you have more room to work and less of a chance of busted knuckles.

You will probably have to make up a tool to hold it then. There are 4 holes in the face of the pulley. The special tool they have at the Dodge dealer is a U-shaped spanner wrench with metal protrusions on it that fit into 2 or 3 of the holes to hold the pulley while loosening the nut. You can probably make your own tool pretty easily. Get some thick steel stock at Home Depot or Napa and measure the distance between 2 of the holes on the pulley face, then drill holes in the stock the same distance apart. Put a couple of bolts in the holes that are long enough to reach into the holes, tighten nuts down on them and use the homemade tool to hold the pulley still. A guy on here did that and said it worked very well.

I remember the fan clutch removal kit from Autozone didn't work very well for me either, so I used one of the wrenches that came with it and put some long bolts into the holes on my pulley face, then the square spanner wrench from the kit fit around the bolts pretty snug, and then I held the pulley with that and put my adjustable wrench on the nut and loosened the fan clutch nut by hand.

The second time I removed my fan clutch I just set the wrench on it and smacked it with a 3 lb. slege, and it came right off.

Sorry to know you are having so much trouble with yours. Don't give up, it'll come off with enough of the right kind of persuasion.
