Cupping
Cups or scalloped dips appearing around the edge of the tread on one side or the other, almost always indicate worn (sometimes bent) suspension parts. Adjustment of wheel alignment alone will seldom cure the problem. Any worn component that connects the wheel to the car (ball joint, wheel bearing, shock absorber, springs, bushings, etc.) can cause this condition. Worn components should be replaced with new ones. The worn tire should be balanced and possibly moved to a different location on the car. Occasionally, wheels that are out of balance will wear like this, but wheel imbalance usually shows up as bald spots between the outside edges and center of the tread.

Dear Tom and Ray:

I have a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe with 47,000 miles on it. Recently it developed an unpleasant rumbling noise. After taking it to the service department, I was told that my tires are "cupped" and should be replaced. For a temporary fix, they rotated the front tires to the back. I still have the noise, but it's not as bad. And given a choice between living with the noise and paying for new tires, I'm thinking of living with the noise. The tires have plenty of tread. Are "cupped" tires safe to be traveling on? Also, what causes tires to cup? --Susan

Tom: Well, first of all, cupped tires are tires that appear to have little scoops taken out of them. They're also called "scalloped" tires -- like scalloped potatoes.

Ray: There are two main causes of cupping. One is an inadequate suspension system. If your shocks are worn out and the tires are literally bouncing up and down as you drive down the road, every time they come down, they get scuffed, and that leads to cupping.

Tom: So you might not like the idea of spending money on new tires, Susan. But you might need new tires AND new shocks.

Ray: The other cause of cupping, in our experience, is real cheap tires. For some reason, they seem to get cupped more often than better-quality rubber.

Tom: Unfortunately, it's really not safe to drive on cupped tires. They have indentations in them. So every time the tire rotates, there are high spots that aren't touching the road. That means you have less traction, and less ability to stop and turn.

Ray: If these are your original tires, it's probably time to replace them with a good-quality set (original tires on all but high-end cars are notoriously cheap). But have your mechanic check out your shocks first. They may be fine. But if they're not, you want to replace them too, before you cup another set of tires. Good luck.

I cranked the tbars about an inch but that is it, it does rub sometimes when turning like if I hit a bump and whenever I back up so hopefully some trimming this weekend takes care of that.

UPDATE: So just wanted to do a little update since I was reading lots of threads and no one ever updated haha. Anyways believe it or not I think its been about 750-1000 miles that I've put on these things so far and all I can say is that I love them. They are super quiet for an MT and I'm still averaging great gas mileage. They seem to be wearing good so far and even though I haven't tried them out off road yet in gravel they have done good. Backing up my GF's driveway I used to spin the whole way up but these just gripped and ripped no spinning at all. I even had a guy at a used car place the other day when she was test driving cars ask me about 5 times if I wanted to sell it to him or trade it in but no way in hell thats happening. They do minor rub in the front if I'm hitting a speed bump when turning or something like that also basically every time in reverse they rub when i'm turning. It doesn't hurt the tire or rip anything up though so I'm not worried. Overall I've been super impressed and happy with these tires so if your looking for a great MT and/or a 32x11.50 that will fit with some minor things then these are def. recommended by me!

They look great! I was torn between them and the Duratrac...I got the Duratracs cause they were a few bucks cheaper. Look awesome just like these!

Id like to know how the ell you get that mileage. of course, you have the exhaust upgrades I dont...
