Default waterpump / bypass hose

hey all, long time since i posted here, good to see it is still active

2001 dakota V-6 3.9 liter, 49000 miles

am going to replace the water pump but i noticed that there is a bypass hose that i need to take off.

i can't see where the other end of hose goes away from water pump, it is under the AC compressor.

about 1 year ago i changed all other hoses and would like to change this one as well, while i have the water pump off now would be a good time.

do i need to remove AC compressor ?

my manual says nothing about it

what are the chances of reusing the original bypass hose, assuming i can get it off the water pump without cutting it ?

any other tips are appreciated.

Alt and ac have to come off anyway to do water pump. I would do the hose while you are right there dont want it to leak after everything is all put back together plus its like 7.00 for the hose.

Find the water pump pulley removal tool, and rent it! Otherwise a strap-wrench, and colorful vocabulary are in your future.Good luck!

i have a method of removing the fan clutch already
i have done it twice this year thinking it was bad, all the time it was the water pump instead

the pulley is factory pressed on the water pump

okay i got 'er done today and thought i would share some tips i learned along the way

took me about 3 hours and believe me i took my sweet azz time doing it.

i found these instructions and used most of them...............
http://www.dodgedakotas.com/boards/v6/16904.html

the other guys says "Now you need to remove the air cleaner cover.", i didn't have to do that.

when i inserted the metal tube that came with the new water pump, i did so after the water pump was mounted to the engine, but here is a tip for ya, the bolt that secures the metal tube should be started on the engine, this way the tube will not go too far into the water pump, mine did and it cut the o-ring slightly as i was pulling the tube back out, i smeared it with RTV and it sealed then.

i held the AC compressor up out of the way with a piece of wire to the underside of the hood.

all in all not a bad job to do, if ya take your time and think it through.

I didnt take off my alt or AC just the water pump. BUT IT WAS A PITA, to reattach that hose. I guess that is why those have to come off. Oh well it is done and over with.
