Whilst fitting new Pads and Discs at the weekend, I was shocked to find one of the wheel bears to be badly warn (about 1/4" movement of the wheel!).

There had been none of the usual sound of a worn bearing and very little to surgest that anything was wrong (had noticed avery small amount of play in the steering but it felt more like it was a ball joint or tie-rod end going).

My question is: does it really need a whole new hub (its a 4wd, with 4-wheel ABS) or is there a way to get a replacement bearing and press it into the old hub. As you may tell, I'm in the UK and the best price I've found so far is around $270, with a 5-10 day wait! I have acess to full workshop facilities, so if its possible to get the bearing on its own I can fit it.

If it is possible, does anyone have the bearing # ?

 

I think its possible but not realistically worth it cause if ur bearing is shot ur hub is pretty close to being done as well. Our hubs are designed to be non serviceable that is a little steep of a price but u being in the UK with the exchange rates and the fact ur one of the few with a dak over there it seems to be a very reasonable price when I replaced mine that is 2wd rw abs it cost me $150

 

That price was from US parts specialist over here, my nearest dealer quoted $440! These are just for the parts, not fitted!

I just wanted to know how much they would cost in the States and whether you'd go for pattern or original in this case.

 

The price I gave u was just the part I put it on myself the one u need I think is close to 200 over here what brand is it the guy can get u?

 

Re checked the price with the specialist and it turns out he'd quoted for the non ABS hub. Re-priced at more than dealers price!

They all seem to around the same as main dealer, only one could provide name of maunfacture which was Timkin, which I know to be a good brand for bearings AND they said they could get it by the end of the week. Everyone else was quoting the middle of next week!

 

Yea that's what mine is. Have u tried possibly. Contacting websites to have it shipped internationally would prolly take longer but might be cheaper

 

Look on ebay but DONT buy the cheap china brand. Look for a Timken wheel bearing and hub. Thats your best bet. its a lot cheaper than a stealership and its better quality.

 

In the end I got one form a US specialist over here. He was the only one who said he could (and did) get one in time to get it fitted for the weekend. The bonus was it was also a Timkin.

So, new bearing is fitted and now the car feels terrible! There's a bad vibration, so I took it to a tyre shop to see if there was a wheel out of balance. When they put it on the machine, the tyre was out of shape.

The question I ask is: is this just coincidence or could one be related the other? Could the failing hub have hidden the out of round tyre or even caused the bearing to fail?

I'd been looking into new tyres for the winter so I guess it will just happen a little sooner!

 

It can go either way the out of round tire coulda made a vibration that caused premature failure of the hub or a out of round hub constantly spinning wrongly can cause the uneven wear

 

While ur at it tho I'd definitely give the pass side a good checking by lifting the truck off the ground and seeing if there is any play in the hub
