Default 2003 V6 Fan Removal

Hi,

I'm getting ready to replace the water pump on my 03 V6. Tomorrow I intend on getting the fan off. It is reverse threaded but is that looking at it from the front or from the engine side? Can I leave the belt on for some tension and remove it with a large crescent wrench or should I go get the special tools to do the job? Once the fan is off and the pump is replaced do I need to even put the fan back on?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

If our looking at the truck from the front of the engine bay you turn it to the passenger side so to the left. There is a bolt (i think 12mm) that will release tension on the belt to get it off, hunt around for it(i cant remember exactly where its located.

Also all 2000+ model dakotas have a CF and a E-Fan, unless you do alot of uphill driving or sit in traffic for very long periods of time, you can go without the clutch fan. The efan is thermostatically controlled so it will turn on at 210 if your thermostat is stock.

Good luck!

depends where you live. cool weather then you don have to worry about it overheating usually. but in the summer for me it gets a little warm sometimes.

yes don't take off the belt and either get a wrench on it and smack it hard to break it loose or take a vice grip or another pair of pliers or something to hold the pullie and turn it left. mine gets about 210 sometimes but the efan always kicks it right back down to 190-195 so you will be fine it also goes down to like 175 coastin down hills (pa mountains) which it wont do if the fan is on it...if you do a search on the subject you can probably find a pic of how the wrenches go on I know I posted it at least twice but can't find the pic or thread right now

i know this is a real old thread but i also have a 2003 v6 3.9 and was just wondering where this e-fan is located? I think my clutch fan is not acting right (staying on too much, sounds like a prop plane a lot of the times). thanks in advance guys

This is my 4.7L with the combo fan shroud/coolant overflow removed. You can see the fan right up against the radiator. I suspect yours is similar. Stick your phone with flash on under the shroud and you should be able to snap a pic.
