Default Dakota AWD question

So I have done a little researching on this already, but still can't seem to make any sense of this. What is the power split (if there is any) on a 2002 Dakota 4.7 Auto AWD? I have heard some people say there is a definite split, and some say that power just goes to the tire with the least amount of traction. What about the center differential and how does it work? I have also read that the AWD models really don't get much worse gas mileage that a model with selectable 4WD. Anybody point me in the right direction?
