Cool new to forums

we have a 1999 318/5.2 dakota, getting 17 mpg and would like to get it better, but we would like to get more horse power if possible. we were told if it has a egr valve to remove it and we would pick up hp, we don't know if it has a egr valve tho, and if we remove it will it confuse the computer.
