Default Gas Mileage (Winter Edition)

You get worse gas mileage in the Winter, you start 10 million threads about it...and no one ever tells you how to fix it.

Reasons you get worse gas mileage:
cold air is denser, more aerodynamic drag
cold air is denser, more oxygen = more fuel = more power
cold engines are less efficient
cold drivetrains are less efficient
winter fuel is less powerful
you idle more

Ways to solve problems:
aerodynamic modifications, grille blocks and bed covers are the only ones you can do and not look too gay.
install a "Warm Air Intake"
use a block heater
nothing much you can do about the drivetrain, maybe use synthetic lubes.
can't do anything about the less powerful winter fuel
idle less

General fuel economy tips:
Use 87 fuel, pump up your tires to near max PSI, drive like you don't have brakes, slow down...

Yeah, there a minor things you can do, but overall, it is what it is. I'm not going to drive the truck without letting it warm up, just to save fuel. Also, although pumping up your tires to max pressure is good for gas, it's terrible for driving in snow and ice. We get a lot of snow up here in the Northeast and it's not worth it to drive around with 45 psi in your tires because you will be all over the place. Also, I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a bed cover to save .1 mpg.

Not trying to bash what you are saying at all. It definitly sucks using more gas in the winter, but it's winter. Get over it. If you don't like it, move to Florida with everyone else.

I'm not the one starting the threads, I understand the physics behind gas mileage.

How long is your commute? It's not too noticeable if you commute a long time at operating temps. It's when you're dumping all that fuel in to warm up that your mileage starts to suffer.

It depends sometimes its no more than 10 miles or as much as 50miles. It also depends if I keep the truck in the garage(min temp is 50) right now im not cause currently my jeep has no axles under it. If it does stay outside I start it up 2-5 min before I leave.
