Question Can you program key fob without oringinal???????

I called the dealer and verified by vin number that my dakota has keyless entry then went ahead and bought one on Ebay. My issue is I didnt notice in the instructions for programming that the "original" key fob is needed. I never got the key fob when I bought this dakota and if I can get around paying the 57.00 fee the dealer wants to program this that would be great. Any thoughts?????????

the directions in the bottom half only function if you have a working fob. The top half I dont understand. Can someone clearify. From what I get from it I need a DRBIII scan tool which I priced at 3000.00 plus dollars to do this? How does this help me spend less then 57.00 at the dealer????

What it means is if you dont have one working remote the dealer needs to use the drb scan tool to program it.

The way I understand it if the remote you do have is functioning, that is to say if it works and sends out a RF signal like any other keyless entry remote control unit, the remote you bought off Ebay can be taught to your existing remote keyless entry system. That is what the process listed in the post above is supposed to do.

If you can't program it yourself, maybe try another dealer to see if they will do it cheaper. $57.00 is about right for programming with a DRB and it does take a while to do so they have to charge a half hour of labor for it.

You can take the remote you bought off ebay to Advance Auto Parts and they have a tester there on the counter that you can use to verify the remote is sending out a signal. That way you will know for sure if your remote is functioning. Then you should be able to learn the new remote to the existing keyless entry system.

1. Turn ignition to run position (as far as you can go without starting engine). 2. Using any Working remote, press the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds. 3. Within the specified 4 to 10 seconds, continue pressing the UNLOCK buton and press the PANIC button for 1 second and release both buttons at the same time. A chime will sound within 3 seconds to indicate that the vehicle has entered remote programming mode. 4. Within 30 seconds of the chime, press any button on all remotes to be programmed including previously programmed remotes. A chime will sound after each remote is programmed. 5. Turn ignition to OFF and remove key. 6. Test all remotes.

Default in other words

You need to take your truck to a dealer or locksmith, to get one programmed. I submitted the instructions for people that need programming instructions that DO have a working remote, my apologies.
