Default 02 4.7 overheat help

friend of mine is stuck on donner pass, his engine overheated, he says the lower radiator hose is luk warm and the upper is hot, assuming the 2nd gens are like the third, the thermostat is in the lower hose, there for i told him the thermostat is probably stuck, or the water pump has died, he is going to try to pull the stat, and get it moving, are we on the right track?

Hopefully it's just the tstat. A lot cheaper than a waterpump. A fairly easy job too, just a little messy.

well.... turn out i'm dealing with a much bigger engine dummy than i thought... it overheated again, then i asked him how he filled the system and if it was full, he said "its full, the reservoir is full" i asked about the rad, and he said, its its emty, i asked if he filled it, and he said "your supposed to fill it there???" anyway hes up and moving again, hopefully without any major dammage, but we will see when he gets it too me, he claims to have some sort of miss, so it doesnt sound too promissing but we will see... thanks guy's

Hopefully it didn't over heat too much and damage anything internally.

btw, awesome truck man, I've seen it before but don't know if I've told you. Nicest 3rd gen I've seen probably.
