im probably over due for a tranny fluid change. but i heard that when you add new fluid it can shock the trans b.c of the new clean fluid and cause it to slip? do i change it or not?

I change mine about every 25-30,000 miles along with the filter. Never had a problem and clean fluid is always better in my opinion.

I think the problem comes about when someone runs the trans for wayyy longer than the recommended change interval, the fluid starts to break down, and the internal clutches wear much faster. Supposedly what happens is that when the fluid is replaced, the clutch dust is removed that is providing needed friction between the worn clutch plates, and the trans begins to slip. I would think that it doesn't really matter if you change the fluid at this point or not (on a neglected transmission), because the transmission is on it's way out and it's only a matter of time.

How many miles total on the trans, and how many miles since the last fluid/filter change?

I would pull the pan and see how much clutch dust has accumulated in the bottom of the pan. If there is a lot of dust and metal shavings in the pan, you may want to only replace the filter and the fluid that came from the pan drop. You might not want to do a full flush, just to keep some of the "friction" in the system.

If you want to do a full flush, I would hope it is similar to the Ram's. Do a search in the 3rd gen Ram section (probably FAQ section) for trans flush. My Dak is a 5 speed, so I have never had to think about flushing it.
