Default Newb mod recommendations?

Hey all! Havent been around here very long and have been looking at different mods and such. I have an 04 Dak Crew cab 4x4 with the 4.7 and auto tranny. Just looking for the best bang for the buck mods and i was curious.....did these models come with LSD diffs or all open? Ive searched quite a bit and havent really found much about it. Ill try and get some pics up soon. I have read about throttle bodies, HO cams and CAIs being common but im afraid that the cams may be a bit more involved than i wanna get into. Im pretty good mechanically but this is my first Dodge so im trying to learn. Nice site, hope to be around for a while.

Your pretty dead on as far as mods go, HO Cams, CAI and throttle body are all a good plac to start, but remember if you do get the new cams, you will need to get a tune in order to get the full potential that the new cams have to offer. From what I have read, the SCT hemifever tune is the one you want. Also, if your truck has the fan clutch and the electric fan, you can remove the fan clutch, which typically gives a little better throttle responce. As far as the LSD, there should be a code in your glove box to look for to tell you your gear ratio and if the rearend is open or not.

sweet truck, and welcome. where are you from?
check the sticker in the glove box, it will tell you what rear end you have.

ditch the clutch fan and do a search for the TMR mod. its free and works.

a good way to know what rear end you have is to jack it up on stands. spin one wheel by hand and if they both spin you have the lsd.

x3 on the clutch fan, free 4.7 mod.

2 best free mods are the tmr mod and removing the fan the 4.7 has the secondary electric fan so you wont overheat. Other good mods are CAI,exhaust, tuner and throttle body. Cams are great too but invlove some work.

If you jack the rear end up, and you spin one tire clockwise and the other spins the same direction, then you have and LSD, if you spin the tire clockwise and the other spins counter clockwise, then it is an open rearend.

I am from SE Alabama. Cool i found the TMR mod and fan mod. Just not too sure on the mechanical fan deal. I think it's worth the piece of mind sometimes to keep it on there. I did that to my old Nissan and ended up putting it back one. I hunt a lot and plan on putting my winch on the Ol Girl. Is the front receiver the most common way to go? It just looks like it would hang down mighty low. What engine oil do yall use? Ive heard about a lot of issues with engine sludge buildup. thanks in advance

i use full synth pennzoil. everyone has their own favorite. only reason i started using it was b.c it was the first thing i bought and figured i would always use it. but it does the job. with 130xxx miles on mine when i pulled my valvecovers off it was near mint with no sludge. i wouldnt worry too much about it unless that motor was just totally abused.

BTW i know the way to tell and LSD but it just hasnt seemed like it has good breakaway or it's worn out if it has one. I know a worn out LSD will act like an open diff.
