Code p0012
After a week of my truck running horribly, i finally got a check engine light to come on. I turned the ignition on/off 3 times to get the odometer to read "12". I assume that means the code it is giving is P0012. Looked it up and says "Variable camshaft timing over retarded - bank 1".
Not sure really what to do/where to look next. I didn't think the 5.2 even had variable valve timing. I feel as though it may be the Crankshaft position sensor, which i hear is an easy fix.
Any help, as always, is appreciated.
ps. I've had a god-awful rattling/grinding coming from somewhere when the truck idles. possible relation (timing chain)?

I don't think the 97's can give you the codes through the odometer. Maybe I am wrong but I think I read Dodge didn't start that until the 2001 model year. If the Crankshaft Position Sensor is bad, the truck won't start at all. And I don't know a lot about the 5.2 and I am no mechanic by any means but the camshaft timing code doesn't sound right to me.
If the check engine light is still on, take it to Advance or Autozone, they will read it with a hand-held code reader and give you the true description of the code for free. Or you can buy your own code reader pretty cheap at Harbor Freight Tools, you never know when you might need it again. Advance is always offering discount codes for online purchases too, so you might get a deal on one that way.

The key on - key off test doesn't give P codes. You'll need a reader like Silver says.
Code 12: Direct Battery input to PCM disconnected within last 50 ignition key-on cycles. Normal if battery has been disconnected, otherwise check battery power and ground connections.
And, unless there was some major mods to the 5.2, you only have one cam. It couldn't have a "bank 1" variance.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for the info fellas. Did more searching around the forum and I'm thinking my catalytic converter may be clogged. It would explain the rattling and the terrible engine performance. It would also explain the very rich smelling exhaust.
Thanks again for the help. I haven't gotten it scanned yet but i'll keep you updated.

Well i took it to my buddies shop because i didn't have time to work on it and the codes they scanned were for a misfire on cylinders 2&4 and a random misfire. rattling was from a broken exhaust bracket. He couldn't replicate the poor performance on the highway that i had. The engine isn't missing at idle.
The plugs and wires on the truck have only about 10k on them and the cap, rotor and coil are only about a year old. would a clogged cat cause misfires, but no codes relating to it?

Have you checked compression? Pulled those plugs? How do they look?
Fuel, spark, and compression are what you need. A vacuum gauge can tell you if the cat is clogged.
Are the injectors dirty? Could the intake manifold be leaking? Or as cylinders 2&4 are next to each other maybe a blown head gasket.
Keep us posted. Time to start digging.
