Default Which Trans

Ok yall, as some of you know, I have been chasing a trans problem with my 97 5.2 manual trans. It has the NV3500 and it's pretty much shot. What all transmissions (manual) can Fit this application? i Have been told that a AX15 from a 3.9 will work. is this true? can it take the abuse? are the ratios different?

Not to sidetrack the thread, but may I ask what is wrong with your trans? I had thought the NV3500 was a good transmission. In fact I plan on getting a used QC 4X4 and swapping in a diesel; most likely the Dakota I get will have an auto and I planned to swap an NV3500 into it. Is that not a good choice? Why don't you find a used NV3500 to replace yours, and if you need spare parts you will already have them? Or have you lost trust in them?

ax15 is a lot less duty then the 3500 and I wouldn't not swap on into a V8 if it would even fit. whats wrong with it and just replace it with another one they are good tranny's if not beaten on.

I appreciate the attention fellas but I'm really looking for answers to the question asked on this thread. No disrespect intended I hope none taken. I've posted a couple other threads recently describing what has been going on and asking a couple questions but the questions have been ignored and it kinda turned into a general discussion about trans and gears. I'm hoping to keep this one geared towards questions and answers from here on out. Either way to answer your questions, I seem to have destroyed either 3rd gear or a selector gear on the main-shaft. I haven't heard of this being much of an issue with the dodges as much as the chevrolets though but it seems like mine is having that issue. Playmaker, where did you hear that or are you that experienced with both transmissions? not trying to be a smarta$$, just trying to get my facts straight with what I've heard from other sources.

Not sure if you are aware of car-part.com but you can narrow your search down pretty well and use alot of criteria to find the part you want, I found this one in GA, not sure how far it is away from you since I don't have your zip to search by distance.

Hope this helps with your search, you may try looking for the rams with the same trans 4x2 318 and close years, Brian

From what I have heard the ax isnt going to be able to put up with the power of the v8 you can get by with it if you take it real easy. I cant see how you cant find a tranny. The junk yards near me have at least 3 nv3500's on hand and they charge 150.00 for them.

ok maybe I was wrong about it not being a good combo, some say it works some say it doesn't and not to be a smart *** either but does anyone ever use google or the search on here...maybe some of these will help all i did was type ax15 behind 5.2 in google...some of it is jeep stuff but its all the same when talking about motor and trans...i think if you could find a NV3500HD that would be your best bet
