Default P S Rack hesitation

My bro' has a 98 Dakota and his PS quit on him while he was turning into the driveway. Thankfully no traffic was there so he was able to man-handle a 5-point turn into his garage. I suggested he replace the pump, which he did with no problems. However after a successful bleed and test-drive, he reported that on a "sudden swerve" he still had no PS. It works fine if he just drives normally with no "desperation moves."
Has anyone out there had this problem? I suppose he needs a rack, but could he have a PS hose that that has de-laminated inside causing a blockage? He could save a lot of time and money if a replacement hose would solve his problem.
Thanks for any help.
