weird problem with my 01 Dakota

Get the Napa cap and rotor, part numbers MO 26 and MO 28. They have brass contacts and they work better, last longer and get a little better spark to the plugs. Both parts together will cost about $25.00.
You can order NTK O2 sensors from www.ngk.com, it's a lot cheaper than buying at the dealer, and NGK/NTK is the supplier for the OEM O2's anyway. I paid $65.00 shipped for both of my upstream O2's from NGK. Dodge dealer charges a lot more. Get the ones that have the direct plug-in harness, the ones you cut and splice the wires are a PITA and not very reliable. Some say you can use Bosch O2's, lots of others here have posted they had a lot of trouble with Bosch. I have read on other forums too that the Bosch O2 sensor just does not work very well with the Dakota. You will need a special O2 socket for the job, it's about $6.00 at Harbor Freight, about $12.00 or $15.00 at the parts store.
As for thr transmission, I have no idea. You may need to have a transmission shop check that out for you. I would find an honest and reliable transmission shop and let them check it out, give you an estimate and then you can decide if it's something you want to do yourself. You might be able to drop the transmisison pan and replace the valve body yourself, if that is really what the problem is. Others here may post and have more info for you on that.

You will probably need a transmission specialist to tell you what exactly is wrong with the transmission. Or as a worse case scenario, take the truck to a Dodge dealer. The dealer could diagnose it and fix it too, just be prepared to pay a lot more for it. If this were my truck I would ask friends, neighbors, co-workers etc and find a reliable and honest independent transmission shop that does high quality work.
