I just bought a 98 dakota, driving it I felt a pulsing when I apply the brakes. The manual said to check the calipers. The caliper pins on the drivers side are n.f.g. the threads in the holes on the knuckle aren't to great. Passenger side the bottom pin is good top n.f.g. I bought stock pins, but I am not sure of the thread size sae/ metric. I want to get the correct helicoil or kingset.
I also bought an oversize pin but I don't want to use it as it advises it is a one shot deal. I don't want to buy a new knuckle either

 

Yeah good luck with that...I had the same exact problem and could not get an answer...I just bought a self-threading over-sized caliper bolt after 20 different people told me to forget the helicoil...

At least after doing that, I know the size of the hole, right?

 

I bought one of those @$15 a piece but the fine print says not to use when changing pads, so I would just be making a bigger hole than I might be able to plug up. I figure that is the last resort. I also bought 4 stock sized pins @$15 for all four. If I can't get an answer here I will contact fed. mogul and see if their tech support can't help me out. I will find out, and post it for everybody. If it were just one wasted hole I might try it but at least 2 are done, and the other 2 are eh, on there way out too.

Im pretty sure 86jeep is right I got the kit in my garage. I would check but I got a 101 temp and dont feel like leavin bed lol. The last owner had oversized bolts in mine and it was fine then a couple of months ago I got a heli coil kit from napa and its like new again bad part was the heli coil kit was 39.99

 

As far as the fine print saying not to use the over-sized bolts, I am pretty sure that is just legal mumbo-jumbo...

Those bolts aren't really subject to any force or anything, which is why they have such a low torque spec and a stupid Torx head...all they really do is position the caliper...all of the force is exerted on the two slots in the knuckle that the caliper fits into...

At least that is how it was explained to me...

Not saying not to helicoil it or anything, because I do think that would be a preferable fix, but rather that I don't suspect that your brakes going to fail if you use the oversized bolt when you put new pads in...

JMHO...

 

They worked for my 02 qc with out any problems

 

I called federal mogul and spoke with a techie M9x1.25 the only place in town that had it was Napa it was $46.49 and the part # is BK7703411. I got some green loctite to seal it in, so hopefully I will never have to deal with this issue again.

I am going to run tap thru first and determine thread condition before I do the helicoil
