Question Transfer Case compatibility question

I apologize for making a thread for this, but I couldn't seem to come up with the correct search terms to find what I'm looking for and I'm getting frustrated. I'm not a 4x4 guy, this is just my beater truck. I want to fix it and get rid of it. It's been nothing but problems, and hasn't moved in over a year.

The truck is a 99 Dakota extended cab, 5 speed manual transmission, 5.2L V8. The transfer case is toast, outer c-clip failed allowing the gear set to slide in and out wrecking the forks and some other parts. I would like to pick up a used drop in replacement instead of rebuilding.

Is the NP-231 from an automatic Dakota the same as a manual transmission Dakota? Bolt pattern transmission side, and the length of the output shaft tail housing?

I search E-bay, they only list automatic for compatibility. Some sellers show Durango t-case as compatible. I search car-part.com, they want $700 for a t-case from a manual, or <$300 for one out of an automatic. Howe many different versions of this t-case were there?

This is all you are likely to get - "I think" or "I believe" or "I would assume"...

No one is likely to say "YES" or "NO"...

At least that was my experience...

I will say...NO.

My t-case was different than one out of an auto...

T-case conversation buried here:

Remember, this is just my experience, so take it for what it is worth...

You aren't kidding. E-Mails phone calls, dealership, junk yards, nobody knows if a 5-speed tcase is compatible with an auto tcase in all the universe apparently. This is ridiculous. Thanks for the link. I guess rebuilding will be cheaper than any more of this BS.

So, any one have a recommended shop to call and buy parts to rebuild this mystery np231 T-Case? I imagine I'm going to have the same trouble finding parts for it as well. Pretty close to calling a hauler and sending this heap to the yard to be crushed.

I'm in Tampa, and anyone who wants a beater/project truck can take it. It has it's issues obviously. First $1K takes it.
