Timing Cover Pitted - 2003 Dodge Dakota
Have a 2003 Dodge Dakota and was starting to see coolant leaking out of the weep hole of the water pump.
Pulled out the water pump this weekend and found the timing cover had some pitting. Anyone else seen this before and what are my options?
Would it be acceptable to just install the new water pump?? Should I replace the timing cover ($3XX from the dealership, plus time to pull out all components to get the timing cover off) or can I fill in the pitting with some material and hope for the best?
And does anyone know how thick the timing cover actually is? The engine was replaced at the dealership back in 2009 and we have about 13k on the engine. If coolant started leaking through the timing cover, what are my chances that it damages or destroys the engine?
Options, opinions, experience and knowledge would all be appreciated.
Thanks…

Sorry for the late reply, but just found your post. My 2000 Dakota 4.7 in 2006 had corrosion on the milled surfaces on the timing cover, so severe the it interfered with the water flow surrounding the water pump. I experienced several overheats as I attempted to resolve high temperature readings, to the extent that the slack adjustors maxed out, stretching timing chain.
Dodge told me they never knew of this corrosion problem. Now I do an annual flush.
