Default possible bad lifter...maybe worse..

Howdy, she's a 2000 dakota with the 4.7 v8. Used to be my old mans truck, it has, well seems like a valve tapping/ticking sound coming from the passenger side of the vehicle, he has takin it to a shop which had it for almost a month, they said it was the timing chain.....2200 bucks later he jumped in and lol same tapping noise I thought he was gonna kill them, he also told them that he thought it was a lifter and they said that they checked both sides and found nothing, anyhow just wondering if anyone has had/heard/seen of the same problem, and possibly what to do, now the noise is ALL the time. oil pressure is really good, and figured id try the lucas oil treatment....soo yea any info is really appreciated thanks in advance.

One of the lifters on the right side of my 2002 4.7L seized in the up position causing the rocker to jump off when the cam came around to open the valve. In the end I ended rebuilding the motor. It certainly doesn't hurt to get new lifters if you're going to be changing the the timing chains anyway. I did a lot of reading when this happened. Most common problem was engine sludge even with frequent oil changes. The 4.7's low displacement creates enough heat at the edge of the heads that it slowly cooks/bakes the oil creating sludge that eventually makes its way through the engine, though not always the case.

Hey N I C K when you had this problem did you end up with any loss of power? also mine is making "the" tapping/ticking sound from the passenger side. ANd when you did your rebuild did you reuse any of your engine parts?

It happened during the winter so there was a little lifter noise which isn't too uncommon during cold weather and smooths out. Noticed a slight loss of power a week prior and temperature was on the high side. Was going down the road and heard the knock up top start. Pulled the valve cover and found a rocker laying where it shouldn't be and the lifter seized. Fortuneately it didn't damage the cam. Checked the other side and found anti-freeze in one of the cylinders, so somehow the head gasket blew. On the rebuild I went ahead and replaced the timing chains(3 of them) and guides, lifters, oil pump,pick-up tube, and water pump. Had the heads milled too.

Bump.... No u got me worried cuz I've had the ticking noise for about 6 months or so now...from pass side u can hear it, but I haven't loaded power that I notice...also my fan wobbles some so I figured it could be the fan clutch? If it's just the litters then it shouldnt be too hard for a DIY kind of guy like me huh...

Have you had a chance to check the injectors to make sure that isnt where your noise is coming from? I have replaced injectors on mine due to ticking and it fixed the problem, just an FYI
