A/C Clutch weak - rebuild the clutch or replace the compressor?
I have a '99 Dakota with the 5.2L with the original Sanden compressor at 186K miles.
The temperatures are up and the "2/70" A/C isn't cutting it... even with the flip out vents in back open - as I do a lot of slow downtown driving. My diagnosing has come down to closed high and low pressure switches, the system holds a charge, the compressor rotates by hand... but the coil on the clutch measures only 1.5Ω, and the 20 amp fuse has blown more than once. While running the system, I can hear the clutch slip. So the coil is weak and has an internal short. I've pulled the plug on it until I fix it.
I've found that I can't just buy a clutch at the Zone/Advance/O'Reillys. I found a rebuild kit on eBay - and a lot of cheap compressors. Of course there is the boneyard route for each too.
I hate to crack open the system, especially since the compressor I have is good as far as I know. So that leaves me rebuilding the clutch or pulling one at the boneyard? What would you do???
