there was no gasket to change its a "new motor" the only thing that was replaced was the oil pan gasket. and oil was fine like 7 days ago.

changed the oil this morning, it was dark but still in good shape. not anywhere near 6qts drained though. i went to my buddies shop and got it on the lift and we both inspected everything. no leaks visible at all!

could oil have just broken down and burned?
or am i burning oil constantly now?

oil level and pressure is back to normal after 10m of driving.

They say a quart to 1,000 miles is a small amount but can still see it burning from your exhaust and a quart to 500 miles is a lot which would look like like a diesel pretty much. How far was your trip and how much oil did you use? Oh and have you been checking your oil regularly?

it is a new to you engine. so it is considered a used engine. you said you had developed a leak and it turned out to be the oil pan gasket. you either replaced that gasket or tighten the bolts to the oil pan and the leak stopped.

so 7 days ago when you last checked the oil had you done anything to the truck since then. also when you say fine was it on the low middle or high on the oil dipstick indicator mark? when you checked the oil was the oil cold or hot. if cold how long had it been sitting prior to checking the dipstick.

reason for these questions is oil expands when hot and warm and when engine is warm (i usually turn the engine off for a minute or two then check the dipstick to allow the oil to drain back to the pan while still having parts lubed) it would give you a more accurate level. if cold and been sitting for a while it could give you a false normal or high oil level.

either way you are likely burning oil if i had to guess. pull the plugs and see if there is oil on any of the plugs. also have someone tell you what color the exhaust smoke is while revving the engine.

burning oil and a 4k mile trip would likely cause a low oil situation.

Hmmm it would seem something happened before you returned home if you said the oil was fine before you left. How was your mpg for the trip? (sorry covering every possible option)

I wonder if the pre detonation had something to do with it? First things are check the plugs and tell us how they look and we can go from there.
