Talking Hi I'm new... Can I tow my Z with 3.7L auto?

Hello,

I have 2004 Dakota 3.7L Auto 2WD. I did some searching without clear answer whether my truck can pull trailer with my Z on it. I have 1993 300ZX Twin Turbo which weighs a good 3600 LBS so with a trailer it's close to 5000-5500 lbs. Will my truck be able to handle the tow? Or leave the towing to AAA? My dakota only has 15K miles as of today. Appreciate any response. Tow will be fairly short not more than 40 miles one way near LA area.

As long as you have a good hitch I think you will be fine. Its only 40 miles and just keep it out of overdrive. My buddy had a 98 3.9 4x4 5 speed and he hauled 5,500lb couple of times a month and his truck did great. Only thing is hauling that be sure to keep your distance from other vehicles cause that load will try and push you.

My father-in-law has a 01 2.5 w/ auto and has 263K and he pulls 4500lb once a week from sacramento to san francisco and back. Given he doesn't go very fast, 50-55mph, but he is still able to do it. If a 4banger can do it then a v6 will have no trouble.

If there's one thing I know about these trucks is they can handle alot, I have a 98 3.9 5 speed with 230k miles and it has has handled 6K+ plus loads without a problem. I don't know what dodge did with these motors but what ever it was there sure did do a fine job of it.

Cool good to know. Just bought a hitch for my ML350 and man these things are expensive. I will probably get the hitch for my dodge soon too. As I grow older I see the need for hitches more and more.

Autozone for hitches. I got a reese class III tow power hitch for 119.00. Its heavy duty. The only thing I dont like about them is the have 2 bolts for the frame and the rest of the weight goes on the bumper so I got a cutting wheel and cut 2 rivets out of my frame where the spare tire bracket mounts and then I put 2 more grade 8 bolts so Im not afraid of anything coming loose.
